Hi everyone,
I’m fairly new in privacy and looking to learn more, but also get something extra on my CV as it may help me get new roles in the future. I’ve been looking into IAPP’s training and certification programs, but want to know if there are alternatives? Someone mentioned Maastricht university DPO class, but are there others also? What is best and what is considered most valuable in the market?
Thank you.

IAPP is a good place to start if you are actually looking for a qualification. If you want to learn more practical things then there are people like Tim Turner who offer great training sessions. I would take a few like that, and free webinars from Fieldfisher before you start diving into IAPP.
Good luck!

The University of Derby have a free online Data Protection Officer Skills course which you can find at:
https://freecourses.derby.ac.uk/
Coursera has a number of courses from different universities, mainly from the US but you get a certification at the end which is good to add to your CV.

Futurelearn also offers a number of courses which have been created by mainly UK and European courses:

The main thing for you to consider though is what direction do you want your career to go in: even DPOs have specialisms whether this is in the sector they work in (for example healthcare, finance, local government, education) and there are also those who have greater expertise in the law, information security/cybersecurity, FOI

Depending on which country you are in, in France you have a few, University courses but also organisms. In Germany you have the GDD and the TÜV certifying DPOs.
I couldn’t offer you an answer as to which are the best or have the most value in the market.

Don’t mistaken IAPP for a “course” as the others above mention.
“certified” DPO courses are very valuable, but not really comparable to the IAPP.
There might be an overlap in the covered topic(s), but CIPP/E (combined with CIPM) is not as extensive as DPO courses in universities. They are both valuable, but in other ways.
Last year, ISACA also released a Data Privacy certification (CDPSE, Certified Data Privacy Solution Engineer), that aims at (technical) IT staff. Considering the background of ISACA (IT Systems / Security), this certification makes sense for technical oriented staff.
To summarise, decide if you want to go for a “course” (like the DPO track in Maastricht University), or a specific certification and investigate from there.
Good luck and welcome in the field!
